North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the rapid development of a nuclear-armed navy, including the construction of 10,000-ton destroyers and secret underwater weapons. The announcement came during an inspection of the newly launched 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon, accompanied by his daughter, believed to be named Ju Ae. State media reported that Kim emphasized the navy's role in North Korea's nuclear deterrent strategy, stating it must be capable of delivering a 'deadly blow' to enemies both above and below the water.
The move aligns with North Korea's five-year defense plan, which prioritizes strengthening naval capabilities. Kim's visit to the destroyer followed the unveiling of a new uranium-enrichment facility, raising concerns over North Korea's nuclear ambitions. The developments occur ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea, marking his first trip to the country since 2019. The visit underscores Beijing's efforts to strengthen ties with Pyongyang amid growing alignment between North Korea and Russia.
Kim Jong Un has previously condemned a botched launch of the Kang Kon in 2025, calling it a 'criminal act.' The destroyer was repaired and relaunched the following month. Analysts suggest Kim may be showcasing military capabilities ahead of Xi's visit, which is set to discuss bilateral relations and regional stability.
