The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in Target’s Up & Up brand baby wipes, prompting a nationwide recall. The recall affects both fragrance-free and cucumber-scented wipes, which were sold in Target stores and online. The FDA identified the contamination after receiving customer complaints of discoloration, skin irritation, and infections. The bacteria, commonly found in soil and water, can cause localized infections in healthy individuals but pose life-threatening risks—such as sepsis or pneumonia—to infants, young children, and immunocompromised individuals.
Recalled Products and Timeline
The recall includes Up & Up Fragrance Free Wipes in 20-, 72-, 216-, 800-, and 1,200-count packages, as well as Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes in 72-, 216-, and 800-count containers. The affected wipes were manufactured between November 7, 2025, and May 5, 2026, with expiration dates ranging from May 10, 2028, to November 5, 2028. Target and the manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, are investigating the reports of adverse reactions.
Health Risks and Broader Concerns
The FDA warns that Burkholderia bacteria can lead to severe infections in vulnerable populations. While healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms, the bacteria can be life-threatening for those with weakened immune systems. The recall has also raised concerns about the safety of disposable children’s products, which often contain chemicals and plastics linked to health and environmental risks.
Consumer Response and Next Steps
Customers who purchased the recalled wipes are advised to stop using them immediately and return them to Target for a full refund. The FDA continues to monitor the situation and encourages reporting any adverse reactions through its MedWatch system.
