Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has accused President Donald Trump of being a "traitor" for his opposition to the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Greene, who once supported Trump, made the remarks during an interview with CNN, stating that Trump's resistance to transparency on the Epstein case contradicts his campaign promises to "drain the swamp." Trump has publicly criticized Greene, calling her "wacky" and a "traitor to our Country."
The fallout between the two began after Greene supported the release of the Epstein files, which the Department of Justice (DOJ) eventually released following the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The 3.5-million-page document covers investigative records related to the deceased sex offender. Trump, who had a long-standing relationship with Epstein, was mentioned in the files.
Four House Republicans, including Greene, spearheaded the effort to release the files, calling themselves "The Bravehearts." However, their political careers have since faced consequences. Former Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger, while Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina failed to advance in her state's gubernatorial primary. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado also faced Trump's wrath after campaigning for Massie.
Sources close to the White House suggest that Epstein was not the only issue that soured the relationship between Trump and the four lawmakers. Massie has long been a critic of the president, and Greene's resignation from Congress was partly due to her feud with Trump over the Epstein files.
