Mississippi teen charged after deadly standoff with police

A 17-year-old Mississippi teen, Cordarius Hobbs, has been charged in connection with the deaths of an elderly couple and a subsequent standoff with law enforcement. The incident occurred on June 3 in Mendenhall, Mississippi, where Hobbs allegedly broke into the home of Billy Blair, 74, and Virginia Carol Blair, 71, and killed them. Deputies from the Simpson County Sheriff's Office responded to the home after family members reported the couple unreachable. Upon arrival, deputies were met with gunfire, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin, who described the situation as a burglary in progress. One deputy was shot during the exchange. Hobbs was eventually arrested after being shot by a Mississippi state trooper and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He now faces multiple charges, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and two counts of aggravated assault over 65 years old. The couple's family released a statement expressing their grief, stating, 'We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone.' Friends of the Blairs described them as selfless individuals, with one friend, Jason Busby, calling their deaths a 'tragedy' that left the community in shock.
