A massive fire engulfed a 1-million-square-foot medical supplies warehouse in Tracy, California, on Thursday, sending thick black smoke visible for miles. The blaze, which started shortly before 1 p.m. at the Medline Distribution Center, spread to a neighboring FedEx facility before firefighters contained it. No injuries were reported, and all employees were safely evacuated.
Firefighting Challenges and Spread
The fire, which began on the warehouse roof, was fueled by high winds, extreme heat, and low humidity, making containment difficult, according to Tracy Fire Chief Randall Bradley. The sprinkler system reportedly failed to operate, exacerbating the blaze. Firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading further into the industrial park, which also houses distribution centers for Amazon and Home Depot.
Evacuations and Impact
Authorities evacuated nearby warehouses as a precaution, including the FedEx facility. The Medline warehouse, a key supplier of latex gloves, masks, and surgical instruments, was declared a total loss. Tracy Mayor Dan Arriola confirmed the fire was confined to the industrial zone, far from residential areas. Air quality impacts are being assessed.
Investigation and Response
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, which continued to burn as of Thursday evening. Medline issued a statement confirming all employees were accounted for and pledging cooperation with authorities. The investigation will begin once the fire is fully extinguished.
