The U.S. State Department and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on June 11, formalizing a partnership aimed at fostering unity. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UFC president Dana White signed the agreement ahead of the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House on June 14, which coincides with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
During the event, Rubio delivered an impromptu speech emphasizing the need for shared experiences to bridge societal divisions. 'We are so divided by so many different things,' he said, noting that Americans increasingly consume news and engage in different online spaces. He highlighted that few activities bring people together, urging more opportunities for collective enjoyment and common ground.
The partnership follows reports of rising political polarization in the U.S. A March 2024 Statista report found 'particularly strong' polarization, with many citizens identifying as 'far-left' or 'far-right.' A Pew Research Center study released the same week identified nine distinct political groups, each with overlapping and conflicting priorities. The White House event, featuring a 4,300-seat stage, underscores the administration’s support for the UFC as a unifying force.
