Tech Entrepreneur Joshua Baer Dies in Texas Plane Crash

Joshua Baer, a 50-year-old entrepreneur and founder of Capital Factory, died in a plane crash on a Texas highway. The small jet, which had taken off from Los Cabos International Airport in Mexico and was bound for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, crashed on Texas State Highway Loop 20 in Laredo after pilots reported mechanical problems and requested an emergency landing. Two people died in the crash, while four others survived and were hospitalized. Baer, known as an 'Austinpreneur' for his role in fostering Austin's technology ecosystem, was a prominent figure in the startup community. He founded Capital Factory in 2009, which has since become a major venture capital firm supporting a wide range of tech startups. Baer was also recognized for his mentorship and networking, often described as a 'super connector' in the business world. Tributes poured in from business and political leaders, including Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, who praised Baer's contributions to Austin's tech industry. The Austin mayor honored him with a key to the city in 2023. Bryan Chambers, co-founder and president of Capital Factory, described Baer as a 'fearless leader' and a 'brilliant partner.' The crash is under investigation, with officials confirming mechanical issues as the cause.
