Comedian Carlos Mencia, whose real name is Ned Arnel Holness, was arrested Thursday and charged with 12 felony counts of tax fraud by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The charges allege Mencia failed to report or pay taxes on more than $8.7 million in earnings between 2019 and 2024, resulting in over $300,000 in unpaid state taxes.
Immediate Action & Core Facts
Mencia, 58, was arrested at his Los Angeles home and held on $250,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. If convicted on all counts, he could face more than 11 years in prison, along with back taxes and interest that would nearly double the amount owed. The charges include six counts of failing to file personal income tax returns and six counts of failing to file corporate tax returns.
Deeper Dive & Context
The charges are the first filed under the newly established Business Tax Fraud Unit by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. Hochman described Mencia as "one of California's biggest tax scofflaws," noting that the California Franchise Tax Board sent Mencia 78 notices about his delinquent bills, which went unanswered. Mencia had previously filed tax returns before 2019.
The case does not address potential federal tax obligations, as the IRS has not informed Hochman's office of Mencia's federal tax status. Mencia's attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Mencia began his comedy career in Los Angeles in the late 1980s and gained prominence in the early 2000s. He hosted the Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia from 2005 to 2008. He currently has 80 upcoming shows listed on his website through 2026.
