Major League Baseball (MLB) has warned three San Francisco Giants pitchers for writing Bible verses on their caps during the team's Pride Night event. The league stated that its uniform policy prohibits any writing on playing apparel, including messages like 'Dad,' 'Happy Mother's Day,' or family names. The players—Landen Roupp, J.T. Brubaker, and Ryan Walker—wrote Genesis 9:12-16, which references the rainbow as a biblical covenant. The Giants organization reaffirmed its support for Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community, apologizing for the incident.
The controversy has sparked widespread debate. Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow criticized the players, stating they should have been aware of the sensitivity around Pride Night in San Francisco. He highlighted the team's long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, including its early efforts to combat AIDS. Meanwhile, Texas Rangers fans, attending a 'Faith and Family' game, expressed gratitude for the team's focus on traditional values, as the Rangers are the only MLB franchise without an official Pride Night.
In a separate incident, a minor league team, the York Revolution, canceled a game after several players refused to wear Pride Night jerseys. The team forfeited the game but pledged $10,000 to a local LGBTQ+ nonprofit and hosted a community inclusion event. The Revolution emphasized that the players' actions did not represent the organization's values.
