A 48-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting two people in Pomona was arrested on Thursday after a high-speed chase that spanned multiple counties. The pursuit began around 3:30 p.m. when the Pomona Police Department responded to a "shots-fired" call at an apartment building, where a man and a woman were found dead in a hallway. The suspect, identified as Robert Galtman, fled the scene in a black Kia sedan.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) deployed a plane and license plate readers to track the suspect, who was later spotted driving northbound on the 5 Freeway near Roxford Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect did not yield, leading to a pursuit that lasted over an hour and 30 minutes through Kern and Los Angeles counties. The chase involved the suspect evading spike strips, crossing medians, and weaving through traffic. Authorities described the suspect as armed and dangerous.
The pursuit continued onto steep, single-lane mountain roads, where the suspect maneuvered around hairpin turns and discarded multiple objects from the vehicle. The chase ended in the Antelope Valley when officers used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle at about 30 mph. The suspect exited the car with his hands raised, his pants down around his legs, and walked backward toward officers, who took him into custody. During the arrest, authorities also recovered a small puppy from the vehicle and carried it away safely.
CHP Southern Division Chief Chris Margaris credited the arrest to collaboration with the Pomona Police Department and the use of CHP resources, including the crime suppression team and the IRIS unit. Police have not yet released additional details about the case.
