Two major tech companies are now competing for employees by offering improved workplace perks, including enhanced snack budgets. X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has publicly recruited engineers from Meta, promising to match or exceed any snack budget offers. The move comes as Meta, which has faced recent layoffs and strategic shifts, announced plans to improve employee morale by upgrading office kitchens with better snacks and drinks.
X’s product lead, Nikita Bier, posted a message on the platform targeting Meta employees, stating that the company is hiring web and data engineers and scientists. He offered to match or exceed any snack budget provided by other companies. Applications for these roles, which pay between $180,000 and $440,000 annually, must include the word 'snacks' to be considered.
Meanwhile, Meta has been working to boost employee morale after multiple rounds of layoffs and AI-related strategy changes. The company’s CTO, Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth, recently shared a memo outlining plans to improve office amenities, including snacks and drinks. However, Meta’s workplace morale has reportedly suffered in recent months, while X’s morale is reportedly high, partly due to its recent success in the tech sector.
X is part of xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, which is under the SpaceX umbrella. SpaceX recently completed the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history, creating over 4,000 new millionaires within the company. This success has helped X surpass Meta in market valuation, moving from the 12th to the 6th most valuable company globally, behind Amazon. Neither X nor Meta responded to requests for comment.
