A former UK police officer, Luke Salmons, has reached a confidential settlement with North Yorkshire Police after being suspended in October 2024 for questioning Islam during a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training session. Salmons, a Christian community support officer, alleged that his suspension stemmed from discussions about Islam, including bringing a book by an ex-Muslim author to work. The settlement follows his resignation and legal action with the Christian Legal Centre, which supported his discrimination claim.
Salmons claimed the training sessions were heavily focused on Islam, with trainers repeatedly stating, "Islam is a religion of peace." He also questioned a Muslim sergeant about Gaza, Hamas, and jihad, which he said was a respectful exchange. Two days later, he was suspended for "gross misconduct" after officers photographed a book in his locker, Answering Jihad — A Better Way Forward by Nabeel Qureshi. An inspector allegedly told him, "I don’t like your beliefs."
The settlement terms remain undisclosed. North Yorkshire Police has not publicly commented on the case. Salmons’ legal team argued that his suspension violated his freedom of speech and religious beliefs. The case has raised broader questions about DEI training content and workplace discrimination in UK law enforcement.
