Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal dominated Uzbekistan 5-0 in their Group K World Cup match on Tuesday, silencing critics after a lackluster start to the tournament. The 41-year-old forward became the first player in history to score in six World Cups, surpassing Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer at the global finals.
Portugal’s victory came after a disappointing 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opener, which drew heavy criticism from fans and analysts. Ronaldo’s performance against Uzbekistan, where he netted in the sixth and 39th minutes, showcased his enduring ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo’s leadership and work ethic, emphasizing that the veteran’s hunger for the game remains unmatched. “He is a human being and is allowed to have feelings,” Martinez said. “I have never worked with a player that says, whatever happens today, tomorrow he is hungry to work again.”
Uzbekistan coach Fabio Cannavaro took responsibility for his team’s heavy defeat, acknowledging mistakes in tactics and strategy. “All my life I have taken responsibility, as a player and as a coach,” Cannavaro said. “If we lost 5-0, it is because today I made mistakes, and not them (the players).”
Portugal’s disciplined performance, marked by quick passing and relentless attacking, contrasted sharply with their earlier struggles. Martinez attributed the turnaround to a shift from playing with “heart” to playing with “head,” a lesson learned from their opening match.
Ronaldo’s goals were complemented by Nuno Mendes’ free-kick and an own goal by Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov. Substitute Rafael Leao added a fifth goal in the 87th minute, sealing Portugal’s commanding win.
The victory keeps Portugal in contention for the knockout stages, while Uzbekistan faces elimination unless they secure a win in their final group match against DR Congo. Portugal will next face Colombia in their final group fixture.
