An Army sergeant was sentenced to life in military prison on Tuesday for a shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia, that wounded five people in August 2025. Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 29, was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after a court-martial last week. Prosecutors accused Radford of targeting leaders in his supply unit, wounding four soldiers and his then-fiancé, Raekwon Smith, who testified he followed Radford onto the base fearing he was suicidal.
Radford pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault and domestic violence charges but maintained he never intended to kill anyone. Witnesses described how Radford, a supply sergeant in the 3rd Infantry Division's 2nd Armored Brigade, shot four soldiers before being restrained and disarmed by fellow soldiers. His sentence also included a dishonorable discharge and reduction in rank to private.
Army prosecutors sought life without parole, while defense attorneys argued the shootings occurred during a mental health crisis. Radford had no prior disciplinary issues but was arrested for a DUI in May 2025. The shooting began after an argument with his fiancé, who followed him to the base.
