Two Michigan parents, Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, have been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture after their 7-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, died in November 2025. The boy weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death, with morbid obesity listed as a contributing factor to his heart failure. Prosecutors allege the parents failed to provide adequate care, nutrition, or medical treatment for Casper, who was autistic and had never attended school. The couple also has a 5-year-old daughter, who was reportedly found in poor condition during the investigation.
The charges were announced by Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, who described the case as involving 'extraordinary, terrible neglect.' Authorities responded to a 911 call at the family’s home in Flint Township, which was described as a 'hoarder' environment. Casper was found in a makeshift bed shared by four family members and died shortly after being taken to the hospital.
An autopsy report confirmed that extreme morbid obesity caused Casper’s death. Prosecutors allege the parents did not seek medical care despite having health coverage and failed to provide proper nutrition or exercise. The couple’s 5-year-old daughter was also reportedly found morbidly overweight, dirty, and naked when law enforcement arrived.
The O’Briens were arraigned last week, and prosecutors have emphasized the severity of the alleged neglect. Leyton stated that the case involved 'wanton and willful neglect' by the parents, leading to their son’s death. The couple’s legal proceedings are ongoing.
