House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) warned a roomful of Christian conservatives at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual summit that Democrats would launch widespread investigations into President Donald Trump’s family, cabinet, donors, and allies if they regain control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections. Johnson, speaking on Friday, framed the upcoming elections as a critical defense against Democratic oversight.
‘Impeachment’s not even the big concern,’ Johnson said, emphasizing that Democrats would ‘turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body’ if they win. He claimed ‘half of you in this room will be targeted’ and asserted, ‘I run the protection program. I’ll take care of you.’ His remarks came during a speech where Trump also addressed the gathering.
White House Spokeswoman Olivia Wales responded to Johnson’s comments, stating that Trump remains the leader of the Republican Party and that his agenda has delivered ‘the most secure border in American history’ and ‘the largest middle-class tax cuts ever.’ She emphasized Trump’s commitment to maintaining a Republican majority in Congress to continue his policies.
Democrats have not publicly responded to Johnson’s warnings, but some have previously criticized Republican efforts to block investigations into Trump’s actions. The House Committee on Homeland Security has been a focal point in past partisan disputes over oversight.
Johnson’s remarks align with his broader messaging that Republicans must retain control to prevent Democratic-led investigations. He has framed the midterm elections as a ‘battle between common sense and crazy.’
