FIFA has confirmed that rainbow flags representing LGBTQ+ pride will be permitted inside Seattle’s Lumen Field for the World Cup Group G match between Iran and Egypt on June 26, despite objections from both national teams. The decision comes as part of Seattle’s Pride weekend celebrations, which the host city has designated for the fixture.
Teams Object to Pride Branding
Both Iran and Egypt had previously requested that FIFA cancel the Pride-themed festivities. Iran’s Football Federation president, Mehdi Taj, called the branding "inappropriate" and "an irrational move," while Egypt’s Football Association stated it "categorically rejects" any activities supporting homosexuality during the match. FIFA, however, has maintained that the rainbow flag is a symbol of human rights and will be allowed in the stadium.
Match Implications
Egypt needs only a draw to secure top spot in Group G and advance to the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Iran, meanwhile, must win to guarantee progression, as a draw could leave their fate tied to the outcome of the Belgium-New Zealand match. A loss would likely eliminate Iran from the tournament.
Teams Avoid Pride Questions
Ahead of the match, both teams sought to steer media attention away from the Pride controversy. During a press conference, a FIFA official read a statement on behalf of Iran, stating that the team would only answer questions related to the game itself. Egypt’s players and staff similarly avoided discussing the Pride celebrations during their press engagements.
Stadium Preparations
As the teams arrived at Lumen Field, players from both sides appeared focused on the match. Egypt’s Mohamed Salah led his squad off the bus, while Iran’s team, arriving from their base in Mexico due to U.S. travel restrictions, also looked prepared for the clash. The match is set to kick off in less than 90 minutes.
