Millions of Americans are expected to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with events in Washington, D.C., and Ames, Iowa. The festivities include concerts, parades, fireworks, and military displays, but also come with logistical challenges like road closures and flight restrictions.
Independence Day Events in DC
On July 3rd, Washington, D.C., will host the annual "A Capitol Fourth" concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol, featuring performances by Trace Adkins, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus. The event will conclude with a fireworks display at Mount Vernon and will air live on PBS.
On July 4th, the National Archives will host celebrations starting at 8:30 a.m. with live music and arts and crafts, followed by a ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence at 10 a.m. The National Independence Day Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. along Constitution Avenue, featuring displays from all 50 states. The National Mall will also host military flyovers and musical performances starting at 1 p.m., culminating in fireworks in the evening.
Ames Celebrations
In Ames, Iowa, the festivities begin on July 2nd with a patriotic concert by the Ames Municipal Band at Bandshell Park. The "America 250 Big Bash" on July 3rd will feature food trucks, inflatables, and live music at the Ames History Museum. Fireworks will follow at 10 p.m. east of Jack Trice Stadium.
On July 4th, Ames will host a 5K run at 8 a.m., followed by a downtown parade at 11 a.m. with the theme "Happy Birthday, America!" Slater, a neighboring community, will also hold a drone photo event, carnival, and fireworks on July 3rd.
Logistical Considerations
The events in D.C. will cause road closures, suspension of commercial flights, and restrictions on boat traffic. Visitors are advised to plan accordingly and check for updates on event schedules and transportation disruptions.
