Human remains were discovered in the chimney of P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo in Queens, New York, on Tuesday morning, prompting an investigation by police. The discovery was made shortly before 9 a.m. while officials were responding to reports of a foul odor at the elementary and middle school, which has been closed for summer construction since Friday.
The remains were found inside a chimney, and the city’s medical examiner removed them to determine the cause of death. Police are working to identify the deceased individual and are investigating how the remains ended up in the chimney. It remains unclear how long the remains had been there.
No students or staff were present at the time of the discovery, as the school was closed for construction. Contractors had been working on the building over the last few days, and police are confirming whether all workers have been accounted for. Permits were obtained for wiring, hot water heating, and other work, according to City Buildings Department records.
The City Department of Education described the discovery as "deeply upsetting and concerning." The school community is being supported while the investigation continues.
