Sony announced on Wednesday that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, marking a full transition to digital distribution. The company cited consumer trends, noting that digital downloads accounted for about 80% of its full-game software sales in fiscal 2025. New PlayStation titles released from January 2028 will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and digital retailers. The change does not affect games already released or scheduled for disc release before that date.
Sony also revealed plans to shut down the PlayStation Store on legacy PS3 and PS Vita devices. The closures will begin in select markets this year, with a global shutdown in 2027. The company stated that older consoles can no longer support modern secure payment systems. Previously purchased games and content will remain accessible for download.
The announcement follows industry-wide shifts toward digital media, including Rockstar Games' decision to release Grand Theft Auto VI as a digital-only title. Retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart have also reduced shelf space for physical game copies as streaming and digital options gain popularity.
