Authorities in Ohio rescued 16 children from a squalid home in Hamden, arresting four adult relatives on felony child endangerment charges. The children, aged 18 months to 18 years, were found confined to a small room under deplorable conditions, with some unable to speak. Seven were hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
The discovery was made during an unrelated investigation on Tuesday. Neighbors and local business owners expressed shock, stating they had never seen the children, who were not enrolled in school. The family had moved frequently over the past two decades. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the conditions as 'pure evil,' while Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain noted the home was covered in human waste.
The children are now in temporary custody of the Ohio Department of Children and Youth. Prosecutors ruled out human trafficking, emphasizing the case involves an 'intra-family situation.' The four adults—two parents and two grandparents—face 17 counts each of endangering children. Their bond is set at $300,000.
Investigators continue to assess the children's conditions and gather evidence. The case has raised questions about how such conditions went unnoticed for years.
