A Maine couple, Elvia and Todd Malcolm, intervened when they witnessed a black bear chasing a moose calf in Telos Township. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2026, about an hour from their home in Lincoln.
The couple was heading out for a day of fishing when they spotted a female moose near a wooded area. They noticed the moose appeared agitated and was grunting, likely calling to her calf. Suddenly, the calf and bear emerged from the trees, running toward the couple’s truck.
Todd Malcolm decided to act, placing his truck between the bear and the calf. He accelerated to create distance, causing the bear to retreat into the woods. Elvia Malcolm expressed relief, noting that the mother and calf were reunited afterward.
The couple captured photos of the chase through their truck’s windshield, which they later shared with The Associated Press. Elvia Malcolm described the experience as intense, emphasizing that she did not want to witness the bear catching the calf.
The Malcolms emphasized that their intervention was not intended to harm the bear but to protect the calf. They confirmed that the mother and calf were safely reunited after the incident.
