FIFA has suspended the one-match ban for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to play in the World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday. The decision comes after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s red card, which was issued during the U.S.’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The red card was given after a VAR review for Balogun stepping on Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle.
Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia criticized the decision, calling it an "April Fool’s Day" move and questioning FIFA’s integrity. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) also expressed astonishment, stating the decision contradicted FIFA’s competition regulations. Meanwhile, U.S. officials and fans celebrated the reversal, with Trump praising FIFA for "doing what was right."
Under FIFA’s rules, Balogun will be on probation for one year. If he commits another similar offense, the suspension will be enforced. The U.S. team, which has advanced to the round of 16 for the first time since 2002, will face Belgium in Seattle on Monday.
