Professional squatters are exploiting fake leases, forged documents, and legal loopholes to take over homes in Los Angeles, according to experts. Former Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Moses Castillo and veteran private investigator Michael Youssef told Fox News Digital that some squatter cases involve fraud, identity theft, and criminal activity, including gang involvement and extortion. Both men argue Los Angeles should create a dedicated anti-squatter task force to help law enforcement distinguish legitimate tenant disputes from criminal conduct.
Castillo said the creation of such a task force is 'way overdue,' arguing that California's laws have too often favored unlawful occupants over property owners. He stated that professional squatters know how to manipulate the system, causing significant financial and emotional stress for homeowners. Many homeowners endure months of legal battles, financial losses, and emotional strain while trying to regain possession of their properties.
The experts emphasized that squatter cases often extend beyond traditional landlord-tenant disputes, involving complex legal and criminal elements. Castillo noted that homeowners face health impacts, stress, and financial burdens as squatters occupy their properties.
