North Korea's Kang Kon, a 5,000-ton destroyer that suffered a disastrous launch in May 2025, has successfully tested its weapons systems, state media reported. The vessel fired its main gun, autocannon, and vertically launched missiles, including 'strategic' cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Kim Jong Un attended the tests and ordered the ship to be commissioned for active duty within two months.
The Kang Kon is the second destroyer in its class, following the Choe Hyon, which entered service in June. North Korea plans to build two more Choe Hyon-class destroyers and a 10,000-ton warship as part of Kim's ambition to develop a nuclear-capable navy.
The destroyer's initial launch in May 2025 failed when its stern slid down a ramp prematurely, damaging the hull. Satellite images showed the ship capsized, and Kim detained several workers responsible. After repairs, the vessel was relaunched in June 2025.
During the weapons tests, the Kang Kon also trialed electronic warfare, information processing, and target detection systems. Kim emphasized the importance of completing the trial process responsibly before deployment.
