Heavy rainfall and flash flooding struck New Jersey on Monday, causing widespread disruptions, structural damage, and multiple water rescues. The most significant incident occurred at BJ’s Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, where a portion of the roof collapsed, temporarily trapping two individuals inside. Emergency responders, including Monmouth County Sheriff’s deputies and Ocean Township police, arrived at the scene around 11:16 a.m. and confirmed that the two individuals were able to free themselves and exit safely. No injuries were reported.
The storm brought record rainfall rates of nearly 5 inches per hour in some areas, leading to rapid flooding on roads and highways, particularly along the Jersey Shore. In Neptune City, 25 people were rescued from floodwaters, while dozens of others were trapped in vehicles or impacted by flooding in their homes. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as numerous roads became impassable.
Flash flood warnings were issued in 11 New Jersey counties, including Monmouth and Ocean. The National Weather Service reported multiple water rescues in coastal sections of Monmouth County, with Belmar police closing Route 35 between 16th Avenue and Route 71 due to flooding. Wall police also advised residents to avoid all non-essential travel.
The storm caused isolated power outages and prompted some residents and businesses to shelter in place. Emergency responders continued to assess affected areas to determine when it would be safe for residents to return home.
Meanwhile, the slow-moving storm system also impacted parts of New York and surrounding areas, raising concerns about potential flooding in transportation networks, including New York City’s subway system. Nearly half a million people across the country remained without power due to severe weather conditions.
