Four people were shot in East Los Angeles late Sunday night following celebrations of the Mexico-England World Cup match, which England won 3-2. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported three separate shooting incidents near Whittier Boulevard, with all four victims transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The first shooting occurred at 9:40 p.m. near Whittier Boulevard and Leonard Avenue, where two people were shot during an argument. A second shooting was reported eight minutes later at Amalia Avenue and 6th Street, and a third incident followed shortly after on Amalia Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. No arrests have been made, and investigators are determining whether the shootings are connected.
Crowds had gathered in the area to celebrate Mexico’s performance in the tournament. The Los Angeles Police Department had issued a city-wide tactical alert earlier Sunday to ensure sufficient personnel were available in case of disruptions.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shootings to contact the Sheriff’s Department’s East L.A. station at (323) 264-4151.
