Ohio authorities have solved a 1985 cold case murder after reviewing old evidence, including items discovered behind a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Georgia. John Warren, a traveling salesman, was found dead in his Holiday Inn room in Middletown, Ohio, on October 17, 1985. His 1985 Oldsmobile car and personal belongings were missing when his body was found. A few days later, police in Dalton, Georgia, recovered some of his belongings behind a Cracker Barrel, while his car was later found in Redington Beach, Florida.
The investigation stalled for decades due to insufficient evidence, but in 2019, the case was reopened, and items from all three crime scenes were submitted for analysis. The results identified Randy McAllister, 62, of Columbus, Ohio, as a potential suspect, along with a deceased accomplice. A grand jury indicted McAllister on murder and aggravated murder charges last month.
Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell noted that cold cases often lack sufficient evidence to proceed, but detectives have been persistent in their investigation. The case remained unsolved for over 30 years before new forensic analysis provided breakthroughs.
The investigation involved multiple jurisdictions, including Ohio, Georgia, and Florida, highlighting the complexity of solving cold cases across state lines. Authorities emphasized the importance of advances in forensic technology in reopening and solving decades-old crimes.
McAllister’s legal proceedings will now proceed, with the indictment marking a significant step toward resolution for Warren’s family and the community.
