OpenAI's Fidji Simo has announced her departure from her full-time role as CEO of AGI deployment, transitioning to a part-time advisory position. The move follows an extended medical leave due to a severe exacerbation of her chronic illness, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which she has lived with for seven years.
Simo shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating that her recovery would require more time and focus than initially anticipated. She expressed gratitude for the support from OpenAI's leadership, including CEO Sam Altman, who praised her contributions and wished her well in a separate post.
OpenAI is restructuring responsibilities following Simo's departure. According to a Bloomberg News report, her product and business duties will be divided among President Greg Brockman, CFO Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Simo's exit comes as OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO and expands its AI capabilities, including the launch of a super-app designed to integrate multiple AI tools. She previously served as CEO of applications before her title was changed to reflect the company's focus on AGI deployment.
In her post, Simo emphasized the challenges of managing a chronic illness while contributing to technological advancements. She also highlighted the importance of prioritizing health, acknowledging that she had delayed this decision in the past.
Altman and other OpenAI executives have expressed support for Simo's decision, underscoring the company's commitment to employee well-being. The transition reflects broader discussions in the tech industry about workplace health policies and leadership sustainability.
