A Hungarian court has sentenced an Irishman to 14 years in prison for the murder of Mackenzie Elizabeth Michalski, a 31-year-old nurse from Portland, Oregon. The defendant, identified only by his initials L.T.M. due to Hungarian anonymity laws, was found guilty of murdering Michalski during an intimate encounter in November 2024 and disposing of her body in a forest near Lake Balaton.
The Budapest-Capital Regional Court ruled that the defendant intended Michalski’s death, as he did not attempt to resuscitate her or call for help. The court also noted that the defendant cleaned the apartment, placed Michalski’s body in a suitcase, and drove it to the woods in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Michalski was last seen alive on November 5, 2024, after meeting the defendant at a Budapest nightclub. Police found disturbing evidence, including videos of Michalski’s body and footage of the defendant approaching other women. The defendant initially claimed Michalski’s death was accidental, but investigators determined he had staged the scene to cover up the murder.
The court ordered the defendant’s deportation from Hungary upon completing his sentence. His attorney has appealed the verdict.
Background and Investigation
Michalski’s disappearance was reported by friends after she failed to return from a night out. Police reviewed security footage from nightclubs, tracking her movements with the defendant. The defendant was detained on November 7, 2024, and later confessed to the killing.
An autopsy revealed Michalski suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was strangled for two to three minutes. Her mother testified that Michalski’s face was unrecognizable when she saw it.
Legal and Financial Consequences
The court ordered the defendant to pay 2.5 million forints ($7,995) in court costs. The roughly 1.5 years he has already spent in detention will count toward his sentence.
The case has drawn attention to Hungary’s legal system and the handling of crimes involving foreign nationals. Authorities emphasized the importance of international cooperation in solving such cases.
