CONCORD, North Carolina — A 4-year-old boy’s daily habit of waving to neighbors has transformed his community in Concord, North Carolina. Roman Butzlaff’s cheerful greetings sparked connections that brought together a dozen neighbors who barely knew each other before. His mother, Anna Butzlaff, said Roman’s loneliness after his parents’ separation was eased by the growing relationships with his neighbors, including senior citizens who now attend his events and celebrate his milestones.
The community’s bond deepened as neighbors began attending Roman’s soccer, basketball, and baseball games, as well as his swimming lessons and preschool open house. Anna Butzlaff initially found the sudden attention unusual but embraced it after seeing her son’s happiness. For his birthday party, she invited only his senior citizen neighbors, who have become close to him. The refrigerator in their home is now covered with photos of these neighbors, symbolizing the lasting impact of Roman’s kindness.
Roman’s parents separated about a year ago, with his father moving to Florida and grandparents living out of state. His mother said his cheerfulness masked an inner loneliness, which began to fade as neighbors like Wade Fulgum, who lives across the street, started interacting with him. Fulgum’s initial visit led to more neighbors joining in activities, including drag racing down the street. Anna Butzlaff said the experience has been life-changing for Roman, who now has a strong support system in his neighbors.
