Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is co-hosting an Islamic women’s spiritual wellness retreat on the French island of Corsica. The event, organized by The Women Sanctuary, frames the Virgin Mary as a ‘Palestinian woman’ under occupation, referencing her reverence in Islam as Maryam. The retreat emphasizes Mary’s faith and devotion, citing her prominence in the Quran, including an entire chapter named after her (Surah Maryam).
Duwaji, a Syrian American artist and activist, has previously hosted similar retreats, including a sold-out ‘Plants of the Quran’ event in Mallorca, Spain, over the Fourth of July holiday. She served as the group’s ‘artist in residence’ during that gathering. The Women Sanctuary describes itself as a women’s retreat organization rooted in Islamic tradition and spiritual renewal, offering retreats in Mediterranean destinations.
Mayor Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, has faced scrutiny for his pro-Palestinian positions and far-left immigration views. He made history in January 2026 as the first NYC mayor sworn in on a Quran. Duwaji has also been vocal in her pro-Palestinian activism, drawing criticism from some political figures. Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Queens) previously commented on Duwaji’s decision to skip America 250 celebrations for the Spain retreat, stating, ‘Nothing says “America 250” quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation.’
