Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler declined a late invitation to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game after initially being left off the roster due to scheduling rules. Wheeler, who has a 2.28 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 14 starts this season, was ineligible to pitch in the game because he is scheduled to start for the Phillies on July 12, the day before the All-Star break.
Wheeler expressed frustration with the rule, calling it "kind of a BS rule" that punishes pitchers for starting on a specific day. He told reporters, "I feel like I was right there, so maybe they put me in, shoot me right back out, and put somebody else in." He later declined an injury-replacement invitation, stating, "Because they disrespected me, so I’m just not gonna participate in that thing."
The MLB rule prohibiting pitchers who start on the last day before the All-Star break from participating is designed to protect players from overuse. However, Wheeler argued that players should be able to manage their own workloads. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani, who was voted to start for the National League, was later revealed to be dealing with a left knee irritation, raising questions about player availability and injury management.
Wheeler emphasized the importance of All-Star recognition, saying, "Guys do take a lot of pride in having the All-Star next to your name. For somebody to kind of take that away from me, it doesn’t sit the best." He has been a three-time All-Star and has received Cy Young Award votes in five seasons.
