Austin Reaves has signed a four-year, $185 million max contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, securing his long-term future with the franchise. The deal, the richest ever for an undrafted player, comes as the Lakers transition into a new era following LeBron James' departure after 23 seasons.
Reaves, who joined the Lakers in 2021 as an undrafted rookie, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to remain in Los Angeles. 'I wanted to be a Laker the whole time,' he said. 'My heart was in L.A. the whole time.' The 28-year-old guard will now play a pivotal role alongside Luka Doncic, who signed a three-year, $165 million extension last offseason.
Reaves acknowledged the emotional impact of James' departure, stating, 'Starting a season without him being on the team is going to be different for me. He’s kind of all I’ve ever known.' Despite the change, Reaves emphasized his respect for James, calling him a mentor and friend. 'I got nothing but love and respect for him,' Reaves said.
The Lakers' new-look roster will feature Reaves and Doncic as the core of the backcourt. The duo has developed a strong off-court friendship, with Reaves describing Doncic as 'one of my best friends on this planet.' Both players missed the start of the playoffs last season due to injuries, but Reaves returned to action while Doncic sat out the entire postseason.
Reaves has steadily improved his production since joining the Lakers, averaging a career-high 23.3 points per game last season. His leadership and chemistry with Doncic will be crucial as the Lakers aim to compete in the Western Conference.
