Jordan Walker, the 24-year-old St. Louis Cardinals rookie, won the 2026 Home Run Derby on Monday night, defeating Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber in a dramatic final round. Walker hit 12 home runs in the final round, edging out Schwarber’s 11 in a new MLB format that allowed unlimited swings if a player homered on their final attempt.
Walker, who became the first Cardinals player to win the Derby, homered on his last six swings, silencing the booing Philadelphia crowd. Schwarber, the major league home run leader with 32 homers, advanced to the final round after defeating Boston’s Willson Contreras in the semifinals. Contreras and Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero each hit 13 and 12 home runs, respectively, in the first round.
The Derby was streamed exclusively on Netflix, sparking backlash from fans who criticized MLB for limiting access to the event. Some fans, particularly older viewers without Netflix subscriptions, expressed frustration over the decision. Others praised the new format, which allowed players to focus on hitting without a time constraint.
Walker’s victory marked a significant moment for the Cardinals, as he fulfilled a childhood dream in front of his family. Schwarber, who led the league in home runs, acknowledged Walker’s performance, saying, 'He earned it.' The 2026 All-Star Game will air on FOX from Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, July 14.
