U.S. President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after a civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming her in 2023. The payment, including interest, was disbursed from a court-supervised account following a judge's order and the Supreme Court's refusal to hear Trump's appeal.
Carroll, 82, accused Trump of assaulting her in a New York department store dressing room in 1996. She later sued him for defamation after he called her claims a "hoax" and denied knowing her. A jury awarded her $5 million in damages, which Trump deposited in escrow while appealing the decision.
Trump's legal team has continued to challenge the ruling, calling the case a "Witch Hunt" and alleging bias by the presiding judge. However, the Supreme Court's decision in June effectively finalized the verdict. Carroll's lawyers confirmed the payment was received and stated she plans to use the funds for retirement.
In a separate defamation case, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $83.3 million, though enforcement of that judgment remains suspended pending further legal proceedings.
