President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the White House confirmed. Trump will join FIFA President Gianni Infantino in presenting the trophy to the winning team's captain.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump's attendance will cap what she described as the most watched, secure, and successful World Cup in American history. The final is expected to draw over 80,000 spectators, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Trump has not attended any prior World Cup matches but has been involved in the tournament's controversies. Earlier, he called Infantino to request a review of a red card issued to U.S. player Folarin Balogun, which was later overturned. The president also attended a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday.
Infantino confirmed the trophy presentation plans in an interview, noting that the tradition involves the host country's president joining the FIFA president in the ceremony. The 2026 World Cup is the first to be hosted by the U.S. since 1994.
