5 Dead in Ohio River Rescue Attempt

Five people died in the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio, after attempting to rescue a struggling swimmer, authorities said Monday. The incident occurred Sunday evening when a group gathered along the river, and one person entered the water for a swim. Others jumped in to assist but also began struggling. A motorist called 911 after spotting a frightened child running along a nearby road, prompting rescue efforts. Two women were pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday night, while the bodies of three men were recovered Monday. Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer emphasized the river's high and fast currents, which had increased significantly in recent days. The tragedy occurred two days after a separate incident in Utah, where five people died in a flash flood. The children involved in the Ohio incident, both under age 10, have been placed in the care of family services. Balzer urged swimmers to assess their skill level and river conditions before entering the water.
