FDA Focuses on Taylor Farms Lettuce in Cyclospora Outbreak

Health officials are investigating a nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in central Mexico. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed the outbreak is under control, but cases continue to rise, with Texas reporting 30 new cases in one week. The FDA initially linked the outbreak to Taylor Farms lettuce after a sample tested positive for cyclospora, but later clarified the result was a false positive. Despite this, the agency maintains the investigation remains focused on Taylor Farms' produce. Taylor Farms has recalled affected lettuce and halted sourcing from central Mexico for the season. Taco Bell, which sourced lettuce from Taylor Farms, has removed the produce from its restaurants in 15 states. As of July 20, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported over 1,600 cases, with thousands more suspected. Symptoms include explosive diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dehydration. Health officials advise washing hands and produce thoroughly to prevent infection. Critics have questioned the impact of funding cuts to the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), which reduced mandatory reporting for six pathogens, including cyclospora. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended the cuts, stating they targeted redundant surveillance and that state-level monitoring continues. The outbreak has led to lawsuits, including one filed by an Army veteran who claimed severe illness after eating at Taco Bell.
