Family's Response
Ruiz's family, joined by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, held an emotional news conference Thursday, calling the shooting an unjustified "execution." His mother, Elsa Ruiz, described him as an "exceptional man" who loved his daughter and family. His 13-year-old daughter, Kah'liyah Ruiz, tearfully recounted learning of her father's death, saying he was wrongly labeled a criminal.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson stated that cellphone video of the incident does not show the officers' perspective, as the department does not require body-worn cameras. The officer who fired the shots is on administrative leave, and the city's independent police monitor is conducting a separate review.
