A Michigan man fatally shot his wife and their six children before killing himself and setting their home ablaze, authorities confirmed Monday. The bodies of Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their children, ages 5 to 15, were found Friday in their Grand Haven Township home after a fire. Autopsies confirmed all died from gunshot wounds, with Kristopher Karolkiewicz taking his own life, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jacob Sparks said during a news conference.
Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set in multiple areas of the home after the shootings, though the origin remains under investigation. The violence may have begun the night before, as neighbors reported the smell of smoke earlier. Authorities believe a registered handgun was used, but recovery efforts are ongoing due to fire damage.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was a substitute teacher, children’s book author, and advocate for special needs children, according to family statements. The couple had four biological children and two adopted daughters, ages 11. Kristopher Karolkiewicz worked remotely as a vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association (AHA) until earlier this month.
The case remains open as investigators seek to understand the events leading to the tragedy. Authorities have not released the children’s identities. The family’s pets also perished in the fire.
