Robert Bush, a 48-year-old funeral director from Hull, has been sentenced for 67 offenses spanning 12 years, affecting hundreds of families at his business, Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. The offenses include failing to bury or cremate bodies, giving families the wrong ashes, taking money for funeral plans without fulfilling them, and stealing from charity collection boxes.
During the sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court, Bush's barrister described his actions as stemming from 'greed and incompetence.' Bush admitted to the crimes and expressed an apology 'without qualification,' though it was not read in court. The court heard that Bush spent tens of thousands of pounds on holidays, motorcycle racing, and home improvements while defrauding his clients.
Police raided the funeral home in March 2024, discovering 35 bodies and more than 100 sets of ashes in disarray. Among the most distressing finds was a paper bag containing the remains of a baby, initially mistaken for a bird. Victims described Bush's actions as 'evil,' and relatives wept during the hearing as details of the 'horror scene' were revealed.
Bush's financial records showed he spent over £42,000 on holidays, £21,000 on motorcycle racing, and £17,400 on home improvements between 2017 and 2024. The judge requested a detailed breakdown of Bush's spending to understand the extent of his fraudulent activities.
