A Washington mother has withdrawn her children from Martha Lake Elementary School in the Edmonds School District after a Pride-themed lesson was presented during music class without advance notice to parents or an opportunity to opt out. Maria Varchetto said she discovered the lesson, which included a video from the YouTube channel "Queer Kid Stuff," was shown to her fourth-grade daughter on June 15 without prior communication from the school.
Varchetto expressed frustration over the lack of transparency, stating she had received no email requesting consent or informing parents about the lesson's content. She also noted there was no option for students to opt out or participate in an alternative activity. The video, titled "Why is Pride in June," is part of an LGBTQ+ educational webseries aimed at children ages 3 and older.
The incident has raised questions about the district's policies regarding classroom instruction and parental notification. Varchetto has since decided to remove her children from the school, citing a loss of trust in the school's leadership. The Edmonds School District has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
