Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, will undergo a competency evaluation after allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their Virginia home on Sunday night. A judge in Loudoun County granted the defense attorney’s motion for the evaluation during a Thursday court hearing, postponing a preliminary hearing from August 31 to September 9.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, survived the shooting after being hospitalized with serious injuries and was released from the intensive care unit on Wednesday. Elijah Bieniemy was arrested and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. The police investigation is ongoing, and no motive has been provided, though his mental health may have been a factor. His lawyer noted that his mental state at the time of the shooting will play a role in his defense.
Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was helping train the team in Missouri when the attack occurred. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mia’s condition, stating she is recovering well and out of the ICU. The Chiefs are scheduled to play their first game of the 2026 NFL season on September 14.
