The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed wide receiver Deebo Samuel to a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, according to reports. The move comes after Ricky Pearsall, a key receiver, suffered a knee injury early in training camp, creating a void in the team's receiving corps.
Samuel, a former All-Pro, originally joined the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft (second round, 36th overall) and spent six seasons with the team. He helped San Francisco reach the Super Bowl twice and earned All-Pro honors in 2021 after recording 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. His versatility—lining up at wide receiver, running back, and even wildcat quarterback—made him a fan favorite under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers traded Samuel to the Washington Commanders in March 2024 for a fifth-round draft pick. His 2024 season was a career low, with just 670 receiving yards and three touchdowns, but he rebounded in 2025 with 727 receiving yards, five touchdowns, and 72 catches—leading all Commanders receivers in those categories. Despite his solid performance, Washington did not re-sign him, making him one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason.
Samuel’s return provides immediate depth for the 49ers, who now have a proven playmaker to fill the gap left by Pearsall’s injury. His familiarity with Shanahan’s system and his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the offense make him a valuable addition.
