The blast occurred at approximately 8:10 p.m. local time near Kudrinskaya Square, a location in central Moscow less than a mile from the Kremlin. Emergency services, including fire engines and ambulances, responded to the scene, where heavily armed law enforcement officers were also present.
Initial investigations by Russian authorities indicate the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee. Officials stated that the dead included a woman who allegedly attempted to bring the device into the restaurant, a security guard, and a patron. Traffic and public transport disruptions
Roads around Kudrinskaya Square were temporarily blocked following the explosion, and the entrances to the nearby Barrikadnaya metro station were closed. A planned evening cycling event in the area was also canceled. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti released footage showing emergency vehicles and law enforcement securing the perimeter.

Moscow police confirmed the explosion occurred near a summer café and reported three deaths and 15 injuries in an initial statement, later updating the number of injured to 21. The Interior Ministry stated that forensic specialists were on-site to examine the scene. Investigators have not yet released a final determination on the cause, though multiple sources, including Telegram channels and Russian media, have suggested a gas leak as an initial possibility.
