The outbreak has triggered a sharp decline in lettuce sales, with one California grower telling The Wall Street Journal that demand for his romaine dropped by 30%. Cox’s Coastline Family Farms, which supplies major grocery chains and restaurants, plowed under 300,000 pounds of lettuce after sales plummeted. The region, known as “America’s Salad Bowl,” supplies nearly half of the nation’s lettuce.
Food industry representatives attribute the drop in demand to consumer uncertainty, with one trade group noting that buyers are “passing on everything” out of caution. Despite the losses, some companies, like Gotham Greens, have continued normal operations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining food supply.
How Cyclospora spreads and why it’s hard to control
The Cyclospora parasite spreads when people consume contaminated produce, such as lettuce, herbs, or berries. The parasite lies dormant in microscopic oocysts—so small that 100 could fit across a pinhead—until ingested. Once in the human gut, the oocysts release the parasite, which attaches to the intestinal lining, causing symptoms including watery diarrhea, cramps, and fatigue.
The CDC has not identified a single source for the outbreak, though a recall of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico by Taylor Farms, the country’s largest lettuce supplier, has been linked to some cases. The complex life cycle of Cyclospora—which relies solely on humans for reproduction—makes outbreaks difficult to trace and control, often leading to infections lasting weeks or months.
Industry response and long-term concerns
Food safety experts and farmers are calling for better detection methods and traceability systems to prevent future outbreaks. Some growers argue that current testing protocols are insufficient, while others stress that consumer education on proper washing could reduce risk.
