Marvel Studios’ and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day achieved the second-largest domestic opening weekend in box office history with an estimated $355 million in North America, according to studio reports released Sunday. The film’s global debut reached $927 million, including $572 million internationally, ranking it among the highest-grossing openings ever recorded.
The weekend haul narrowly trailed Disney and Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (2019), which debuted to $357 million domestically. Brand New Day’s opening day alone generated $169.3 million, including presales, while its Saturday take reached $101.5 million. Analysts projected an $84 million Sunday finish, bringing the total to the reported estimate. The film was seen by an estimated 24.1 million moviegoers across 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.
Record-breaking international performance
Internationally, Brand New Day earned $572 million, with $121 million coming from China alone. The global opening total of $927 million placed it among the top five highest-grossing debuts globally, trailing only Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Studio estimates indicated strong performance across all major markets, including Europe and Latin America.
Premium formats drive ticket sales
A significant portion of revenue—21% of tickets sold—came from premium large-format screenings, including Dolby Cinema, Screen X, and 4DX. Dolby Cinema reported its highest-grossing domestic weekend ever, with $10 million in receipts from Brand New Day. Screen X and 4DX also recorded their strongest weekends to date, with $7 million and $5.2 million in sales, respectively.
Production and studio response
The film, produced by Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures, had a reported production budget of $225 million. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige called the debut “truly phenomenal” in a statement, praising audience turnout and the film’s connection with fans. Feige added that the opening reflected “the enduring power of Marvel’s characters” and hinted at future developments.
Brand New Day marks the ninth live-action Spider-Man film, following previous iterations starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The story follows Peter Parker as he lives in isolation after erasing his identity from the world, facing personal transformation and new threats. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink.
Piracy challenges overshadowed by strong opening
Despite a leaked high-quality bootleg circulating on X (formerly Twitter) for several hours Friday—reaching 5.9 million accounts and garnering 143,000 likes before removal—the film’s box office performance remained unaffected. Clips spoiling major reveals spread rapidly, though most were removed within minutes. Sony declined to comment on the leak, which followed a similar incident involving Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey the prior weekend. Industry analysts noted that such leaks, while disruptive, had not historically impacted the financial success of major tentpole releases.
Context: Franchise momentum and market dynamics
The film’s debut follows the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which grossed $1.9 billion worldwide and became the eighth highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation). That film’s $260 million domestic opening occurred during a COVID-19 surge and faced minimal competition. Brand New Day entered a market hungry for a major action title after a nine-week gap without a major release, according to analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, described the opening as “incredible” and suggested it could help push the summer box office past $4 billion, a milestone not achieved since 2019. The film’s strong performance was attributed to robust presales, fan anticipation, and the absence of direct competition during its opening weekend.
