The review analyzed more than 350 studies on protein restriction and aging across organisms including yeast, insects, and rodents. Researchers concluded that limiting protein or specific amino acids—such as methionine, isoleucine, and valine—may improve metabolism, reduce cellular damage, and activate biological pathways linked to longevity. The findings come as federal dietary guidelines encourage Americans to consume 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, exceeding the longstanding Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram.

The review highlights a metabolic hormone, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), which surges when protein intake is reduced. Animal studies cited in the review associate FGF21 with boosted energy expenditure, reduced inflammation, improved blood sugar control, and extended lifespan. The authors note that for sedentary individuals, excessive protein consumption may overstimulate growth-related processes, leading to cellular damage, systemic inflammation, and weight gain over time.

Higher-protein diets are often recommended to preserve muscle mass and combat sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle tissue. Dudley Lamming, a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and co-author of the review, stated: “It's absolutely crystal clear that there are benefits of protein to muscle growth and exercise response of active individuals. But because most people are relatively sedentary, many people are likely consuming more protein than they actually need, which probably has negative health consequences.”
The review does not advocate for protein elimination but suggests that moderation and targeted restriction—particularly of specific amino acids—may offer metabolic advantages for those with low physical activity levels.
