A North Carolina couple was found dead in their home on July 30, one day after celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, in what authorities now confirm was a murder-suicide.
Police identify the victims as Tracey Parker Willetts, 58, and Stephen Larnell Willetts, 65, of Wilmington. Detectives from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office (NHCSO) stated that evidence indicates Tracey fatally shot Stephen before taking her own life. The investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as they become available.
Emergency responders were alerted to the home after a smartwatch worn by one of the victims detected either a fall or the lack of a pulse and automatically dialed 911. Deputies forced entry into the residence through a garage door after medical responders could not gain access. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Family and neighbors describe a history of personal tragedy for the couple. A second cousin of Tracey Willetts, Fuller Royal, shared on social media that the couple had lost two sons—Zack in 2013 and Colby in 2014. Royal did not specify the causes of death but expressed grief over the family’s suffering. “I can’t begin to imagine how much that hurt and what they went through,” Royal wrote. “I pray they are reunited with their boys and that everyone is whole, safe and at peace.”
Neighbors and community members recalled the couple fondly. Wyatt Patrick, a neighbor, described Stephen as “one of the friendliest people in the neighborhood,” noting that he often engaged in conversations with runners and dog walkers. Another neighbor, Wyatt Heartline, recalled Stephen’s work as an EMT and his willingness to help others. Tracey was also remembered for her involvement in the local paddleboarding community in Wrightsville Beach, where the couple was known for their active participation.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the deaths. The NHCSO confirmed in a social media statement that the investigation remains ongoing and urged the public to refrain from speculation. The case has drawn attention due to the timing of the deaths, occurring shortly after the couple’s milestone anniversary.
